Comparing Pinker to Lehrer:

Art can be used in many ways, especially in the health care setting. Both Pinker and Lehrer discuss the roles and/ or uses of art for different medical specialties. Pinker mentions how neurologists “…tried to explain thought and emotion in terms of physical mechanism of the nervous system”.  This strategy could work for some or to an extent but when used with an artist approach, the understanding of peoples emotions could become easier. Similarly, Lehrer mentions how “[d]ancers can help untangle connections between the body and emotion” which is an artist approach. Dancing brings a new way for not only neurologists to examine someones emotions but also for individuals as a way of expression. The arts also help people cope with their emotions and things going on in their life. This just shows how beneficial art really can be to health care professionals but also individuals themselves.

Comparing Pinker to illustration:

Becoming a nurse someday, means using both science and art. This can be surprising to some because they think science is what is necessary to work in the medical field. That is true. Science is needed to know things like chemicals and the reactions they have with other chemicals so medications can be given correctly. However,  we need another aspect of thinking than just strictly math and science. As Pinker states, “…its [science] unfulfilled promises define the moral imperatives we face today”. Art can fulfill these promises. It can bring the new perspectives needed to make new discoveries. Since I am going to be a nurse, I think art has the potential of bringing new treatments. The challenges we face today will lessen if we begin to think about science with an artistic approach.

  1. You’re on the right track, although I would recommend that you reread Pinker, as I’m not sure that your analysis reflects a strong grasp on his ideas. Your first paragraph’s organization looks fantastic. You DO seem to have a great grasp on the Barclay paragraph. Good job! 🙂
