Ethical Considerations for EBP

After watching the movie “Miss Evers Boys”, it shows how crucial ethics and research education is. The story is told by a nurse who participated in a research study that was carried out inhumanely and she knew of it. Those participating believed they were receiving the medicine and treatments needed when in turn, they were really only given a placebo. Unfortunately, this went on for 40 years until she was taken before the senate. This is a great example as to why ethics and research education is vital. Not only to nurses for their understanding of the correct way to treat participants but also for the general public to understand how they should be treated and how research is carried out in a humane manner. Scenarios such as the one in this movie need to be made aware so others can learn from it and have a better understanding of the damage that it can cause. As a future nurse, who will likely participate in research studies, having this knowledge will benefit me as I am aware of the ethical principles that apply to all participants.

Now that I have completed the ethical assignment, I can say that my understanding of the nurses role in research has improved. I already had a small background of ethics and how it plays a role in nursing but I was able to add to that knowledge and a plethora of new information. I also have a greater appreciation for research seeing all the work that goes into it. In addition, being educated on these allows me to share my knowledge and encourage others to further their education on the subject. I learned about the steps to carry out the research including obtaining consent, the ethical principles as mentioned before, and the standards and rules that need to be met. A part of nursing is to further our education constantly as practices are actively changing. I could potentially be a part of research studies in the future and will definitely take the findings from other evidence based research and/or quality improvement studies into consideration to better my own practice.
