Art in Nursing

This beautiful abstract painting was created by Amanda Shippee. The reason I chose this piece was for many reasons relating to the profession of nursing. Nursing is an art to me in many ways. First off, just by looking at the colors used in this piece, some warm happy colors and other cool, sad colors. Just like nursing, some shifts are exciting and leave you smiling, while others leave you feeling sad. All the irregular, non alike lines depict how each patient is different. No two will ever be exactly alike in, not only who they are as a person, but also their diagnosis, recovery process and outcome. There is no real pattern to the painting, in that none of the lines are the same and the random shapes throughout do not follow any sort of pattern. This also relates to nursing as a career in the sense that no shifts will ever be alike as patient status changes, some leave and new ones are admitted. In general terms, speaking of all art, is the idea that people who create art have talented hands and so do nurses. Nurses have talented hands too, not just brains. We are able to use our hands in ways that make patients feel more comfortable, or feel that we care just by knowing where to place them.

  1. This art piece is a great representation of nursing. I like how you considered the hands of artists to be similar to the hands of nurses- both experienced, meticulous and thoughtful. I actually had a similar piece to yours in which I spoke of the colors as well and how they relate to the nursing profession. You are right about there not being a pattern in nursing similar to this photo – most cases are different from one another even though patients are diagnosed the same.

  2. Bryn’s choice of artwork depicts nursing in a variety of ways as she had stated. One thing that stood out to me the most was how she related all the colors to different emotions a nurse can feel in seconds, hours, or on one’s shift. Overall, Bryn was clearly able to relate this artwork to nursing in a variety of meaningful ways. A few things that were similar to my image that I had chosen was how we both discussed the colors depicted in the images as well as how we both discussed a nurses hands, and how they are a skillful and healing tool to patients as well as their family.

  3. I think the artwork you chose reflects nursing perfectly! I love how you related it to the individual patients and nursing shifts, how no two will ever be the same. I think that is part of the reson why I am so drawn to nursing. The idea that no two days will ever be the same keeps it interesting and that is exciting to me. Yes, like you mentioned some day will be harder than others but I think that adds to the beauty of the profession, how we can be there for others. I like how you mentioned that nurses are not just brains but we work with our hands to heal people, I think that what nurses do is extremly important and powerful and I think the piece of artwork you chose reflects that perfectly. I think you really captured the art of nursing in this reflection!

  4. Bryn, I love this painting, so bright and colorful. You need to go back and provide credit to this talented artist. Your interpretation of the painting and its analogy to nursing is beautiful and was a pleasure to read. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I think that your piece of art was a great choice! I loved how you compared the colors and the way it was painted and brought it all back to the concept of nursing. I agree with you, in the fact that there are always going to be good days and bad days and you never know what is going to occur during your shift. I really enjoyed reading your piece, as it was nice to read all of the analogies that you made throughout the piece, that I had never even thought of before!
