Post- interview Reflection

The nurse that I chose works both as a charge nurse and a floor nurse on that unit. She gave insight on being a leader in both positions. The biggest difference between those two roles is how the charge nurse position is titled, compared to when just working as a floor nurse. However, she says that in both positions, she feels to be just as much of a leader as the other. She mentioned how important it is for nurses to be leaders in order to advocate for patients and give them the best care.

This nurse also brought up how the nursing field is constantly changing with new evidence-based studies, technology or a pandemic thrown at you out of nowhere. Through this, nurses are able to have a voice and come up with strategies to adapt to new challenges. She reminisced on how she was once a new graduate nurse- nervous and anxious to be entering the field as a registered nurse. However, she took all the opportunities she was given to grow and learn as she was so passionate in this field. Currently, she has two nursing jobs that both challenge her and teach her in many different ways. She feels happy to help and answer questions whether in her charge nurse position or just working as a floor nurse and helping her fellow nurses. Teamwork is huge and she stressed the importance of working together and having others to lean on. Like anyone, she does not and can not know everything. Sometimes, she has to refer to other nurses to get an answer and that is okay. Nursing is all about learning and growing and overtime you will become confident in yourself and in the position of a nurse.

It is nice to hear how she started in the same position that I am in now and how she grew so much. This gives me a lot of encouragement and motivation. I was very happy to have the opportunity to have this conversation with this nurse. I have looked up to her since starting my job on this unit. She is so knowledgeable, kind and confident as a nurse and I will definitely take this information with me as I aspire to be like her one day.
