Pre- Interview Reflection

I work as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) in the special care unit and I look up to all the nurses who I work with on the floor as they are all very knowledgeable and truly care about their patients. For this assignment, I decided to pick a nurse leader who sticks out to me which is one of our charge nurses. This individual is hardworking, very knowledgeable, supportive of staff, always willing to help out and is able to stay calm in stressful situations. She is always the go-to person for questions or help, even when she is just working as a floor nurse.

The position of a charge nurse is a formal position. Leadership positions can either be classified as formal or informal. The difference is an informal leader is someone who does not have a titled role related to leadership such as a supervisor or charge nurse but still has leadership qualities. This could be a floor nurse who has an impact on patients or other nurses and steps up and has more of a leader impact. On the other hand, a formal leader is someone who projects leadership but is in a leader position. For this charge nurse, I am excited to interview her and hear more about her outlook on her position. I am interested to hear how she is so confident in being in charge, whether it comes with time or if she has any resources to share. I plan to ask her how she stays calm in stressful situations, what she did to grow as a leader and get into this position, if she encountered any barriers while getting into this position and if she has been faced with ethical issues and how she handles them.
