Viewing this footage is super beneficial in providing examples of how an assessment would go for clients with depression and possible suicidal ideation. Therapeutic communication is a great tool and technique used to help clients feel connected to the clinician, decreasing anxiety and improving the clients’ comfort. As they use therapeutic communication to build that relationship with the client, you can tell the clients become more comfortable sharing information. By the therapeutic responses the clinicians are giving, it provides support rather than judgement and shame. For example, in the interview with Mrs. Jones. The clinician responses saying, “yeah that can be a scary thought thinking about not being able to do something that you are used to doing”. This ensures the client that the clinician is listening to what they are saying and truly cares about the client.  Later on, with the same client, they responded with “I understand that must be difficult…” which again shows they care and are assessing their nonverbal behavior to determine their mood and feelings about the current topic. In the assessment with Mr. Riley, the clinician voices” we can work on that and talk about some treatment options…”  “I can sense some isolation you are feeling” which are both examples of therapeutic communication. Through this, the clinician is clearly understanding and hearing the client and passionate about helping them and finding a treatment that will work for them. In addition, the clinicians did a good job at narrowing down the questions specific for each client and the information they had about each. With Mr. Riley, the clinician asks questions such as “can you tell me more about the split with your wife?”, “how does the topic of divorce make you feel?”, “you keep saying you feel like you are not being useful to your kids, how does that make you feel?” which are all specific and based around the information they have gathered for this client. This is important because it helps the client to feel like someone has taken the time to get to know them and their situation. Overall, the therapeutic communication is going to help the clients feel as though they have someone to talk to who cares, is willing to listen which in turn improves client satisfaction.
