I feel as though I could relate a lot to Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts”.  Most of what she was saying about the process of writing the first draft lined up with mine. I think that it is important for everyone to know that the first draft is not the last/ only draft because as she said, most people do not realize this. Also, Lamott relates writing to pulling out teeth which helped me see that I am not the only one struggling with this process. For me, I feel like I try to get a thought down in one sentence. Meanwhile, other essays that I read use 3-4 sentences to describe the same idea that I packed into one. This is definitely something that I have been trying to work on and will continue to in my “metaphor” essay.

Revision Strategy:

My goal for my revisions is to focus on narrowing down my piece so that it relates better to my thesis. I want to add more of my own opinion and analysis and double check to make sure I do not summarize Geary, Erard and Khullar too much. I feel like this will lengthen my essay and make it more interesting and appealing to read.

  1. Review and make changes based on the feedback of my fellow classmates.
  2. Add what metaphors are (maybe in the introduction paragraph).
  3. Personalize my essay more by adding personal anecdotes and/or personal opinion.
  4. Add citations after my quotes.
  5. Have another person read it and provide more feedback.
  6. Make these changes if I feel they will enhance my essay.

My biggest challenge is going to be making my essay more interesting. I feel like currently, there are a lot of repeated ideas in it and I want to add some different/ new ideas that still support my thesis.

If I have troubles with completing any of these steps, I know that there are people available in SASC that can review it with me and provide some ideas. It will never hurt to get more people to read it and provide feedback!
