My reading experience definitely changed from the first read to the second. When reading something the first time, it is hard to retain all of the details but going through a second time allows more focus on the points that were not picked up the first time. With that being said, the second time I read the piece, I was familiar with what was being discussed so I was able to focus more on smaller details. For example, the second time I got a better understanding of the difference between “metaphor as category” and “metaphor as mapping”. I changed my opinion after this to liking “metaphor as category” more. I feel that these metaphors are simpler and easier to understand because you do not need to know, in detail, the characteristics of what is being related. However, I feel that when I read the essay a second time, I did more skimming because I remembered the information from the first time I read it.

I was also unsure what “pseudo” meant the first time reading it. I will be honest, I did not bother looking it up the first time. However, after the class discussion, I understood it so much better. So after reading it a second time, I was able to actually comprehend what Erard was saying. Especially since he uses the words multiple times.

I think that “glossing the text” is really helpful. The first time I read it, I just skipped over the unfamiliar terms. However, the second time I stopped and looked more into unfamiliar terms and people and it definitely helped me understand better. Although, I was able to understand the piece the first time without “glossing over” and looking these things up. However, that might not be the case for other essays. Something that I looked up was “Enron” because I had never heard of it before and I was unable to understand the relation to “any dramatic scandal”. CNN shares that it was a scandal involving a company that was corrupt and dealt with accounting fraud. Eventually they went bankrupt and thousands of people were affected. By looking more into this unfamiliar term, I was able to have a better understanding of Erard’s words.

  1. Good work! I think it’s super cool when a student changes an opinion between the first read and the second read. I wonder what would happen if you read it again! 🙂
